Making a Plan for Summer Therapies

The school year is coming to a close and we are nearing summer vacation. If therapies are going to be a part of your summer plans, there is still plenty of time to schedule. Here are a few things to consider:

What are the goals for summer therapy?

Perhaps your child has made some big progress this school year and the primary objective for the summer is to maintain these new skills. If so, a group activity might be the right fit.

Alternatively, your child may have experienced a growth spurt, or they may have learned a new skill that really needs some honing. In these cases, intensive therapy might be a good option.

What does the family schedule look like?

If you can commit to regular attendance and practice of home program activities, individual therapy (one-on-one) would be appropriate. If your summer will be filled with frequent trips and irregular schedules, a group setting would allow for participation in therapy activities with less of a commitment.

What challenges and opportunities are coming up in the next few months?

Perhaps your child is looking forward to participating in a club or sport at school next year. Can some focused practice help them prepare for a better experience?

Maybe they will be graduating or transferring to a different setting and will benefit from some consistent training to approach the new school year prepared and confident.

What can be a motivator this summer?

It's always a good idea to share information about your child's interests and likes with their therapist. When appropriate, it is also helpful to discuss any reward systems that you use. Earning special activities or games can be a motivator inside and outside of therapy.

After considering these needs, call (502-777-8284) or email (natalie@zippediatrictherapy.com) for an appointment to create a treatment plan with one of Zip's therapists. Zip offers intensive therapy, weekly treatment sessions, and summer skills camps help each family find something to fit their needs.
